public recipe book!

throughout my life i’ve had a lot of experiences. many of those experiences pertain to candy in some way. my mom was a baker while my dad was a professional moonshiner, so my mom would always make me sweets at the end of every week while my dad would teach me how to be a real man and create drinks from dirt and barrels. he was always a bit drunk at all hours of the day, but he was a caring father.

eventually, my mom also started teaching me how to bake. from there i got more into creating confectionaries like gumballs and soda, and moved my way into being able to create all kinds of sweets. my dad wanted me to take over the family moonshine racket, but after saving up enough money, i decided to start my own sweet shop where i live and work today. i may not make as much money as my parents do, at least now, but it’ll hopefully be worth it in the long run. my goal is to one day buy a nice house, and have 3 kids each named after a different syllable of my grandma’s name.

but that day is not today, today i’m sitting in my office, which is also my bedroom, writing this paragraph explaining my hopes and dreams to the internet. maybe one day i’ll make my family proud of me and my business, maybe one day i’ll be a successful candy maker, but today is not that day, and that day is not today, nor will it be that day for a long while. anyways, time for some recipes.

almond thumbprint cookies

believe it or not, thumbprint cookies do not involve putting your thumbs into the batter, but instead are small bitesized cookies that can be used as a small fun delecible to share with others. i remember for my 6th birthday party, my mom made pistachio thumbprint cookies, because that was my favorite nut at the time. i tend to lean more towards almonds nowadays, though i still do like eating pistachios from time to time to relive my childhood in a way.

ingredients

  • 1 cup of softened (not melted) butter
  • 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
  • 3 1/2 cups of flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 cups of oats
  • 1 tablespoon, per cookie, of your favorite kind of jam (my personal favorite is strawberry)

optional: chopped almonds to roll your dough in. it's not required, but it adds a nice crunch if you prefer a harder texture.

instructions

  • preheat your oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit
  • start by creaming your butter with your sugar until it's thoroughly mixed in.
  • add in the eggs and vanilla, then stir until they're mixed
  • sift in the flour and mix thoroughly. add your salt with the flour too. (the sifting prevents chunks of flour getting into your bake mix)
  • add in the oats
  • roll out your dough into logs, this is where you would roll them into the chopped almonds if you wanted to
  • cut the logs into small cookie shapes and depress the centers for the jam
  • bake for 15-20 minutes
  • let them cool for 5 minutes, then add the jam. your cookies will be best enjoyed warm
  • outcome

tasty cookies for any almond based party, or for those who want a nice snack to have for breakfast.
